As part of Local Democracy Week, which runs from 9-13 October, the Council is inviting anyone living in the district who is interested in becoming a local councillor to an event being held at the Council Offices, Oxted, on Tuesday 10 October, from 7.30pm to 9pm.

The evening will begin with a short introduction from a number of councillors who will talk about why they chose to serve their communities and what the job entails day-to-day. This will be followed by refreshments and informal group gatherings to give every resident the opportunity to ask questions and find out more.

The session will conclude with a short summary of the nomination process for standing as a district council election candidate.

To help plan the event it would be helpful if residents intending to come along could fill in a contact form at, e-mail, or call 01883 722000. Residents can also get in touch if they have any questions about the event.

There will also be two drop-in sessions, hosted by staff in the Council Offices. These will take place on Wednesday 11 October and Thursday 12 October, from 12:30pm until 2pm. There is no need to book a place, just come along.

Councillor Gill Black, Chairman of the Council, said: “There has never been a more exciting time to be a local councillor, whether you represent a party or are independent. This is a challenging time in local government and the course we decide on now will contribute to the success of our district and prosperity of our residents and businesses for years to come. We would like to encourage everyone to come along and explore the contribution you can make to the district.”
